"Granny" Notions

NannyNotions

This doll is really a container for sewing notions. Filled with the needed supplies, a thimble in her pocket and holding a small scissors she makes a cute decoration and is always ready when you need a sewing kit. Great for an office gift or back to school dorm gift. Even the males will need to sew on a button once in a while and who would object to "Granny" being ready with a few buttons, needle and thread!

Materials:

Wide mouth canning jar with lid and ring (size of your choice)
2" to 3" Styrofoam ball
4" square piece of doll fabric of your choice
4" square of gray felt
gray yarn for hair
handful of wool batting for stuffing
Scraps of fabric, lace and trims to dress your doll (amounts will depend on size of jar)
Needle and thread
White craft glue
Pencils, paint or paint markers for the face
scissors
Steak knife to trim Styrofoam
Small sewing notions and tools to fit inside jar
Face may be embroidered instead of painted before you make the head

Instructions:

Cut a slice off of the Styrofoam ball to give it a flat surface. place the doll fabric over the ball gathering it smoothly to the flat part of the ball. Glue in place. Trim any excess fabric. You may need to hollow the center of the flat side of the ball to accommodate the excess fabric Place the ring over the lid and glue the flat side of the ball to the lid. Allow it to dry completely.

Cut a circle of the felt. Using heavy or doubled thread run a gathering stitch around approximately 1/8" from the edge. Gather leaving a one inch opening in the center and tie off the thread but do not cut yet. Stuff the felt circle very firm. Ladder stitch this "bun" to the top or back of the covered Styrofoam ball. You may use some glue for adder stability. This will form the hair bun on your "Nanny" and can be used as a pincushion.

Draw a hair line on your covered Styrofoam ball and using single strands of yarn add hair from the hairline to the "bun". Yarn can be glued or stitched on as you choose.

Stitch a rectangle of fabric into a tube that will fit over the jar. Hem the bottom of the tube then run a gathering stitch around the top edge fitting it over the lid and ring and gather it snuggly around the neck of your "Nanny". Tie off and glue in place.

With a matching piece of fabric make a narrow tube long enough to reach from the neck to the mid point of the jar height. Tie a single knot in the center of the tube and stuff lightly on both sides of the knot. stitch or glue the ends of the tube at the neck of the "Nanny" one end on each side. This will form her arms with the knot as her hands.

Gather a piece of lace edging to form a collar and cover the mechanics at the neck area. Add a pocket to the front of the dress to hold a thimble.

You can add a bow on the collar or embellish with buttons as you like.
