Faux Rice Paper Card
Materials:
Place the sheet of tissue paper on a waxed paper work surface. Tear (do not cut) pieces of colored tissue and portions of printed tissue and arrange in a pattern pleasing to you on one half of the sheet of white tissue. Spray with decorative stiffener.. Fold the second half of the white sheet over the top of your arranged pieces.. Spray the entire area with decorative stiffener. . Allow to dry and peel off the waxed paper. Cut the decorated tissue to form the cover of your card. Add a greeting. Cut the plain paper just slightly smaller than the tissue card, place a thin line of glue down the outside of the plain paper and place this inside the card cover.. Add your note and an envelope.. Optional: make a set of the cards and envelopes, leave them blank, tie with a ribbon and give as a gift of stationary. .
Materials:
On one half of the right side of the fabric draw the initial you plan to embroider. With three strands of embroidery floss, use the stem stitch, embroider the initial. In several places on the embroidered initial add a small ribbon rose and charm. Stitch the lace along one 10" edge of your fabric. Fold the fabric in half right sides together forming a 6" X 5" rectangle. Stitch across the end without the lace and up the side. Turn, fill the bag with purchased potpourri and tie the top closed with the ribbon.
This month our tips are taken from "Rx for Quilters Stitcher-Friendly Advice for Every Body" by Susan Delaney Mech, M.D., C & T Publishing, ISBN # 1-57120-092-4 This book contains over 500 tips for healthy quilting and stitching. Although the title states the book is for quilters the tips included provide good advice for any crafter. # 1. Placing your left foot on a six to nine inch high footstool as you iron help to prevent back strain and swayback. # 2. For those with arthritis, to help with morning stiffness in your hands, wring out a washcloth or sponge in comfortably warm water. Repeat throughout the day if needed. # 3. Stress relief: Take short breaks throughout as you work. Move around and stretch. Give your eyes a rest when doing close work by looking up frequently to change your focus.
Marlies Cohen Marlies Cohen lives in Saint John, New Brunswick Canada, she is the mother of three and an avid crafter. The fact she was born in Switzerland was a great help to Marlies' crafting since the school system there included the needle arts. Beginning in the first grade where they were taught to knit and crochet. As she grew older they progressed on to embroidery and sewing. Marlies has always been interested in creative arts, she watches to see how others do something then will try to repeat the process adding her own spin on things. She says "I've always made my crafts on a shoestring budget and get great pleasure out of creating something beautiful from what other people consider 'worthless'. I guess being left handed and an Aquarius helped a lot with approaching life and things in an unorthodox way". From their first family computer in 1987 to her present web site Marlies has taught herself web design and graphics. The Internet provides access to everything making the fact they live far from a large city less important since they are citizens of the global community. When her husband (Mal) won her a free 3 month web site Marlies looked to the WWW to provide tutorials and learned to build Marlies Creative Universe. The present site has developed from those more humble beginnings and is an effort of which she can be justly proud. Visit Marlies Creative Universe! and while there be sure to check out the crafts using re cycled items. This is a great resource for kids crafts and those who teach kids crafts or just want to recycle more of our throw always. Don't forget to sign her guest book or email: Marlies and let her know how much you enjoy her great site.
Nuts About You Pin
If using a wooden heart paint it red or pink. If using Fun Foam cut the heart shape out. Make a face on each of the nut shells. You can use a variety of different nuts or make them all from the same type. Add yarn hair. Draw the features with markers and use scraps of felt, fabric, lace, ect. to make caps or collars for each of your nut heads. Write on the heart "About You". Glue your nut heads at the top part of the heart. Add a pin back. Place two or three coats of sealer/varnish over the entire pin if using the wooden heart. On the Fun Foam heart seal the nut before you decorate and glue them in place. This pin is now ready to present to Mom, Grandmother, even your teacher if the nuts are done as your classmates.
Materials:
Measure from the top of the plastic pot on one side to the top of the plastic pot on the other side. Cut your square of waxed paper and gift wrap 2" larger than this measurement. Lay your gift wrap right side down, place the square of waxed paper on top of it and center the pot. . They are ready to be used as tray favors or presented as a gift. If you want to leave them on door knobs then in place of tying a bow tie a second knot at the end of the ribbon leaving a loop so you can hang it over the door knob. Bring both layers of paper up on all sides of the pot and tie in place with your ribbon. Write a small message on the paper strip, punch a decorative hole in one end, thread it onto the ribbon and tie in a bow.
Triple Fudge Cake Ingredients:
Pre heat the oven to 350 degrees In a large mixing bowl prepare the pudding following the directions on the instant pudding mix. Blend the dry cake mix thoroughly into the pudding by hand or electric mixer for 1 to 2 minutes. Add chocolate chips and nuts stirring until completely mixed through. Pour into a greased and floured 13 X 9 X 2 inch pan and bake for 35 minutes. If baking in round 8 or 9 inch layer pans reduce baking time to 25 minutes. May be served warm or cold with Ice cream or whipped topping. Hint: Dust the greased pan with cocoa powder or dry cake mix to prevent a white flour look to the finished cake. Decorate A May Pole Cake ![]() Materials:
Top of the cake should be frosted with light green frosting to represent grass. Place the dowel stick in the center of your cake. Attach one end of each ribbon to the top of your Maypole and place the wooden bead to help anchor the ribbon. Begin weaving the ribbons in and out approximately 1" to 2" down the pole. At that point take each loose end and tack it to the back of one of the Teddy Grahams or Animal Crackers. As you tack each loose end place the animal toward the edge of the cake forming a circle as you go. Using a dot of frosting to anchor the ribbons means that the ribbon can be removed and the animals can be served with each slice of cake.
Star of David Ornament
Materials
Overcast all four sides of the felt square with blue ribbon and at the center top where you begin and end make a loop for a hanger. Shape the Star of David in gold by laying out the gold trim and gluing in place. To have a two sided ornament make the Star of David on both sides of the felt square.
